What are the contraindications to running, i.e. who cannot run?

Running is said to be a sport for everyone. However, it is not colourful. What are the contraindications to training in the form of running? Here are some of them:

  • excessive weight – too much excess weight combined with running can lead to joint strain and frequent injuries. Don’t throw yourself in at the deep end. If you want to lose weight, gradually increase the distance and intensity of training, 
  • cardiovascular diseases – before starting your running adventure consult your doctor and ask if your ailments allow you to train and how often you should train,
  • joint problems, joint diseases, injuries – do not necessarily constitute a contraindication, but it is best to consult an orthopaedic surgeon,
  • asthma, diabetes, pregnancy – running is an individual matter. In the case of diabetes, running can help improve tissue sensitivity to insulin and improve health. However, running during pregnancy and with asthma should be consulted with your doctor.

Decalogue of a beginner runner

  1. Get tested if you are unsure if you can run, see your doctor and get some basic tests done.
  2. Find a specific goale.g. running a marathon, improving your wellbeing. 
  3. Take care of your running gearyou don’t have to invest in expensive gear and gadgets right away, but comfortable running shoes are a must. Breathable clothing for different weather conditions could be another purchase.
  4. Start with small stepsif you’ve spent the last few years on the sofa in front of the TV, set yourself small goals and reward yourself for achieving them. Set a training plan and be systematic. 
  5. Don’t get discouraged after the first failuresit’s certain that you will lose your breath quickly during your first workouts and will have to take frequent breaks. So start by walking and slowly increase the effort and length of the route. 
  6. Find your ideal timefind out if you run better in the morning or in the evening. 
  7. Eat and drink sensibly – when running, you should pay attention to what’s on your plate. Your diet should include fruit and vegetables, protein and complex carbohydrates. When you run, your body loses a lot of fluid. Remember to replenish the loss and drink 2 litres of water every day.
  8. Don’t skip the warm-up and stretchingstart by warming up your muscles and finish by stretching – this will help you avoid injury and significantly reduce soreness. 
  9. Diversify the running surfacetry not to run only on asphalt. Running on a forest or field surface is more comfortable for your joints.
