Cycling – medals for the competitors

Sometimes sunshine, sometimes rain. Summer or winter. Whatever the weather and whatever the season, there are keen cyclists on the road. No wonder. In recent years cycling has become a very fashionable and relatively inexpensive sport among amateurs. Cycling is a sport for everyone. You do not have to be a professional. All you need is a bike and a bit of free time to enjoy this healthy passion.

With the growing popularity of cycling, there are more and more competitions and bike races in the spring and summer season. And where there are competitions and rivalry there are prizes. Most often they are cycling medals or statuettes, which proudly present themselves on a shelf or a medal rack for cycling enthusiasts.

The most important cycling races

  • The Tour de France is a multi-stage, three-week cycling race, held in France since 1903. The great prestige of this event is connected with its long history ( it is the oldest race), tradition, scale of difficulty (stages in mountainous terrain in Alps and Pyrenees, the so-called royal stage of the Tour de France) and the power of the media. Taking part in the French competitions is every rider’s dream.
  • The Tour de Pologne is a multi-stage cycling race organised cyclically in Poland. Like the Tour de France, it is also a prestigious international event that has been organised since 1928. The route of the race is about 1200 kilometres leading across the whole country from the north to the south. The race does not have a fixed route – every year organisers change it, so that the competitors can get to know as many corners of the charming Poland as possible.
  • Giro d’Italia is a multi-stage cycling race held in Italy since 1909. The race is held every year in May. The competition in Italy takes place mainly on the territory of this country, but there have been cases when the beginning of the competitions started in another country.
  • La Vuelta a España is a cycling race organised for the first time in Spain since 1935 (it has been held continuously since 1955). The competition lasts three weeks and is divided into several stages: flat, mountain and those of medium difficulty. The course profile is not the easiest. There are a lot of hills, which means that the Spanish competition is often won by specialists in bicycle climbing.

World Cycling Championships

The World Cycling Championships have been organised since 1921. The first was held in Germany. A time trial was added to the championship programme in 1994. A mass start race for amateurs was held between 1921-1995. The winner – the rider with the title of champion – received the so-called rainbow jersey as a symbol of victory.

Cycling as a Olympics discipline

Cycling has been on the programme of Summer Olympics since 1896. Originally the competition was for men only, but in 1984 the Los Angeles Games saw the first time women’s road cyclist event. In the following years new disciplines were added in which women already participated. The Olympic cycling programme consists of: the mass start and individual time trial in road cycling, the sprint, the team sprint, keirin, omnium and team pursuit in track cycling, the cross country race in mountain biking and BMX race. Currently all disciplines are held for both women and men.

Facts and myths about cycling

Many interesting myths and rumours have arisen around cycling. Some of them may be funny. Others are sure to surprise those not involved in the sport. Here are some of them.

it's true!

  • Cyclists always have smooth and shaved legs – riders usually shave their legs so as not to expose themselves to extra pain when changing a bandage. And accidents are not hard to come by in this sport.
  • Cyclists eat a lot of pasta – pasta is a source of complex carbohydrates that slowly release energy into the body, so the rider has the strength to pedal longer and feel full,
  • The bike won’t tip over while riding – a bike let loose on its way out without a rider, will ride on its own until it loses speed.
  • Bicycles do not need to have lights at the front or rear – cyclists are not obliged to ride with their lights 24 hours a day. However, they must have reflective elements, e.g. on bicycle accessories or clothing.

It's false

  • Cyclists must wear black shorts – cyclists can wear shorts of any colour. However, black shorts look the most aesthetically pleasing and are often chosen by riders.
  • Wearing a bicycle helmet causes your head to overheat – the helmets use polystyrene sponge, which is also used as part of the construction of portable fridges, plus the helmets have ventilation holes that allow your scalp to breathe.
  • Cyclists have disproportionately grown legs – regular cycling does not grow legs. It is the muscles that become more flexible and the body sculpture will improve.
  • You can’t ride a mountain bike on the road – unless you are a professional rider it doesn’t matter. A mountain bike is suitable for riding on any surface.
  • A bicycle cannot be insured – insurance companies provide insurance for both the bicycle and the cyclist.

Eco medals for winners

Ecology has become very fashionable and there are more events with references to environmental protection than ever. Offering a unique medal as a souvenir or an interesting promotional gadget is one way to stand out in a crowded market of similar events.

The term „ecology” for our brand

What is ecology for Modern Forms? It is the use of environmentally friendly materials and technologies and supporting the eco activities of our customers. Out of concern for the environment we have introduced a collection of unique medals made of plywood or cardboard. Medals cut from plywood are decorated with elegant engraving, while the cardboard ones are 3D printed. Medals from the eco line are extremely light, maintained in natural colours referring to the surrounding nature. Additionally, the medals are produced from biodegradable materials.

When organising an event in the spirit of eco, it is worth paying attention to medals made of plywood and cardboard. They are an interesting and economical alternative to slightly outdated cast or embossed medals. Eco medals will perfectly fit the climate of an ecological event and can become a unique souvenir for the participants. Especially that plywood and cardboard is a great medium for printing or engraving – you can put anything you need on them (logo of the event or company, any graphics).

Bespoke medals – information needed for pricing

Each medal order is a response to the needs and ideas of our customers. Therefore, all orders are priced individually. The price is influenced by many factors including quantity (the more medals you order, the less you pay for a single medal), materials, complexity of the project, additional elements (e.g. ribbons with a print matching the medal).

Don’t forget to include this information in your sales email:

  • your contact details (e-mail, telephone),
  • date of the planned event,
  • order quantity – how many medals do you need? (if you are not able to give a specific quantity – specify a range e.g. 200-250 medals or ask for a quote for different quantities e.g. 200 and 400; remember that you can order medals even a few days before the event),
  • design of medals – what is your idea for medals? You can describe it, send a sketch or an inspirational photo.
  • the elements that should feature on the medal (e.g. text, logos, graphics, names and surnames of medal winners),
  • additional elements that you wish to add to your medal (ribbons, lanyards, ribbons, boxes, medal cases)
  • demand for other products from our range to match the medals (statuettes, key rings, printed openers).

Medals for triathlon – when running is not enough

If sport is your life and your hangers are already loaded down with running medals – it’s time to take the next step and participate in a triathlon. It’s a versatile sport that consists of swimming, cycling and running for specific distances in a sequence. The distances to be covered vary depending on the competition chosen. However, one thing is certain – a medal for participating in a triathlon is a real treat for a sports enthusiast.

Triathlon combines the three most popular sports. There is a swimming stage at the beginning, another is cycling and then running. No wonder, it is used as a promotion of physical activity. What counts in the competition is the athlete’s speed and endurance. The time of the competitor is counted from the start to crossing the finish line, which means that the moments when the competitor replaces the equipment or gets changed are also added to the result.

Triathlon - distances

The competitions take place at various distances.

  • short distance – 0,75 km swimming/20 km riding bike/5 km running
  • half Iron Man (1,9 km/90km/21,1 km),
  • olympic (1,5 km/40 km/10 km)
  • marathon ( the so-called full or Iron Man) – 3,8 km/180 km/42,2 km – the most exhaustive.

Triathlon events take place all over the world, and some of the most grueling ones are those with an increased distance or held on a course with a high degree of difficulty (e.g. rocky ground, lots of hills, bodies of water with low temperatures). The most difficult triathlons include Celtman!(Scotland), Ironman 70.3 UK (UK), Alpe d’Huez (France), Ironman Lanzarote (Spain).

Triathlon - general rules of competitions

Every triathlon competition is governed by slightly modified rules, but the main principles do not change:

  • triathlon is an individual sport, and a competitor cannot be assisted by third parties, except for volunteers providing food along the route,
  • the contestant with the best recorded time is the winner
  • most infringements carry time penalties (from 1 to 12 minutes of stopping)
  • the competitors are divided into age categories and into professionals and amateurs (the latter are usually more numerous), sometimes there is also a division by weight,
  • participants are obliged to register via the registration form on the day of the competition or earlier; they will receive a starting package from the organisers (including a starting number, swimming cap, wrist band).
  • usually the participant of the triathlon is obliged to pay an entry fee.
  • the organisers always provide medical care on the route, special change zones and nutrition points, as the competition involves a lot of physical effort and the organisers always have the safety and health of the competitors in mind.
  • the organiser reserves the right to cancel the event in the event of unfavourable weather conditions or to change the date of the event.

Remember, the final interpretation of the rules rests with the organisers and the competition rules vary slightly.

Swimming during a triathlon

During the swimming section, the use of any equipment other than a swimming cap and goggles is forbidden. An exception is the swimming suit if the water temperature on the day of the competition is below 20.5 degrees Celsius. The athlete may stop in the water, hold the buoy, but may not push off.

Cycling stage in triathlon events

The rider must wear a helmet when cycling. In the event of a breakdown, the rider may carry or push the bike, but may not complete this stage without the bike. During this section it is forbidden to ride in groups or to use equipment and techniques that reduce the air drag.

Running in triathlon

The last distance on the cross-country course can be covered in any way the athlete wishes - they can run forward, backward or march. A competitor cannot: run with a helmet on his head, barefoot, crawl or in any way be assisted by others (e.g. run assisted by helpers on the competition course).

How do you prepare for a triathlon to win a commemorative medal?

  • Swim training can be done in any pool. However, remember that the competition will take place in an open body of water – take into account the presence of other competitors close to you, the weather conditions, the agitation of the water and the current, your orientation when swimming.
  • You don’t need any special equipment to train for the cycling stage either. You can take part in most triathlon events with any bike. Don’t shy away from training during unfavourable weather conditions, train on narrow roads, focus on dynamic cornering, and be prepared to tackle routes with varying surfaces.
  • When it comes to the running stage, the most important thing is to be systematic, but also to be efficient. Remember not to stop with workouts that improve endurance, including strength exercises as well. Learn to control the pace of your run to keep your energy up to the end. Run on different surfaces and try out running shoes during your training.

Triathlon awards

You don’t have to be the athlete with the best time to win a medal in a triathlon competition. Usually, the organisers reward participants just for taking part and completing the course – after all, even for professionals, receiving awards is a very important moment of the race.

Triathlon competitions are becoming increasingly popular. Every month at least a few big triathlon competitions take place in Poland. Therefore, it is not surprising that competition organisers resign from traditional medals cast in metal in favour of colourful awards, in an eco spirit, with an original shape or with a wow effect (rotating elements, medals glowing in the dark). The popularisation of triathlon in a way forces one to distinguish a particular competition from others, and participation medals are perfect for this.

At Modern Forms we know exactly how to make it the medal from your triathlon event that shines in an athlete’s collection.

What might a triathlon medal look like?

Usually the commemorative medals feature elements referring to all three triathlon disciplines. Most often it is a silhouette of a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner. A medal designed in this way is suggestive, immediately associated with specific struggles.

However, triathlon medals do not have to be a boring disc. They can take any shape, shine with a whole palette of colours, have openwork cut-outs, spatial and/or movable elements. Medals for triathlon competitions can also take the form of a jigsaw puzzle – where each component symbolises a different part of the race.

You can prepare one medal design for all participants in triathlon competitions or differentiate them e.g. in age categories.

trophy triathlon

A medal isn't everything - trophies for triathlon

It will also be nice to add a trophy for winning the triathlon to your considerable collection of awards. Organisers often distinguish competitors with the best time in this way – all participants receive medals, and only the best, in addition to medals, are awarded with unique statuettes. The trophy for the winner, just like the medals, does not have to be boring at all. The more interesting shape, the greater chance that the competition will be perceived as prestigious and worth attention. They will also stay in the competitors’ memory for longer.

The trophies can refer to the graphics and shape of the medals – thus creating a triathlon set. You can combine different materials in the trophies or opt for ecological or recycled materials.
